20. It gets confusing, and gets in the way

There were a number of folks with pretty decent voices in the band.  As a leader I’d try to feature each one – in a democratic way – sort of.  But if there were three songs in a set and four vocalists, well then, for one of the songs we could have Nancy handle the verses and I’d handle the chorus.  It sounded pretty good in the practice, but you know what?  It was confusing for the congregation.  My voice didn’t sound like hers, and were perhaps an octave apart.  Folks in the congregation were confused when she’d stop singing and I’d start.  And then I’d stop for the second verse and she’d begin again.

May be a general rule of thumb that each song have a specific leader.  It’s easier for the sound guy too.  Sound guys need a break.
