Poor Man

from the album “Point my boat home” (c) Dana Williams 2011

Poor man—written while pondering the Beatitudes and wondering why being poor in spirit would be a good thing.  I think I know.

I could’ve been a poor man when I died
I could’ve been a happy man but I cried
I could’ve been a truthful man, but I lied…
Yet the great great love of Jesus Christ has come to me at last
When all the riches of the world could not redeem my past
I should’ve been a fast man but I lost
I should’ve been a trusted man but I crossed
I should’ve been a wise man, but it cost…
I might’ve been a famous man, but I missed
I know I’ve been an angry man, shook my fist
They said I’m just a number on a list…
Jesus was a poor man when He died
Jesus never crossed a man, never lied
Jesus saw my lovelessness and He cried…
And the great great love of Jesus Christ has come to me at last
When all the riches of the world could not redeem my past
Yeah the great great love of Jesus Christ is filling me at last
And trusting in God’s only Son has freed me from my past
I just might be a poor man when I die
